I always had CND in a 70's pigeon-hole - beards, sandals, duffel coats and 'nein danke' bumper stickers.

A chat with Tom Milburn of Exeter CND put me straight today. Not only is nuclear disarmament still there global aim, nuclear power is also within their sights despite claims that it's the eco-friendly way forward. That's simply not true reckons Tom.

Hear on this pod, that the nuclear threat hasn't gone away, and that nuclear expenditure could be better spent on education, health and poverty. A no-brainer really: want bombs or want peace?

I'm surprised they're still relevant (though not surprised they've extended their remit to nuclear energy). It's a bit of an anachronism because not many are fearful of nuclear war between superpowers; this was a product of the cold war. To campaign for disarmament in ''rogue states'' appears absurd - should be campaigning against rogue states period!

Campaigning on a financial basis is never convincing; what if CND channelled their efforts and donations to world poverty instead? What I mean to say is why specifically nuclear arms, why not arms in general? Rather than the phobia of nuclear war, why not real war affecting thousands upon thousands in the world right now?

if you check http://www.cnduk.org/index.php/about/general/about-cnd.html you will note that, whilst the first strategic objective of CND is the elimination of British nuclear weapons and the global abolition of nuclear weapons, the second strategic objective of CND is the abolition of other threats of mass destruction or indiscriminate effect.

There are other organisations campaigning against world poverty. There are other organisations campaigning against arms in general (for example CAAT Campaign Against the Arms Trade www.caat.org.uk). We work with other organisations who have a similar aim - to create genuine security for future generations, but CND was founded to combat the threat of nuclear annihilation and that remains our primary campaigning issue.
