The first in the series of short audio documentaries on the subject of sound and music.Part one takes a brief look at some of the known physical effects that sound has upon human beings, and how we as a species have sought to utilise these properties in areas including sonic weapons..

WARNING : This sound file contains infrasound and ultrasound and as a result may alarm your pets slightly...and even your teenage children...If you are playing this through hifi speakers,it would be advisable not to turn the bass up too high.

Exemplary and commendable production, Mr. Wetton. You don't sound 93 - in fact you remind me of Max Reinhart a little. An excellent pod. Fascinating.

Infrasound reminded me of the time I was taken to see Hawkwind. Whao, those dudes used to muck about with sound. At one point it disappeared below the threshold of human hearing and five seconds later emerged as a minor earth tremor shaking the fabric of the old theatre in which we sat. I half expected the walls to come in.

Talking of gigs, I went to WOMAD recently and noticed there was a guy in a tent offering ''gong baths - ten pounds, half an hour''. Peering in, as one does, I saw a woman prostrate with her head inches from a brass gong about a yard in diameter. Gong guy was seated cross-legged on the other side holding a mallet, and a maiden sat lotus-style at her feet. I can only imagine what happened next because Kenge Kenge Orutu System was due on the big stage and I fancied a jig.

Looking forward to your next pod, Paul. Ta.

Wow Paul, this is amazing! Fascinating information and really fantastic sound effects - but then I'd expect nothing less!

Thanks guys for the kind comments,it's nice to get feedback. The next one will be done in about 3 or 4 weeks; next time I will trace the origins of speech, which poses quite a nightmare on the sound design front. In case anyone's interested I'll publish a hefty bibliography at the conclusion.

You know he's a time lord? At least 93.
I listened to this again today - prof Wetton more like
Got a delivery date for the next one Mr P?

PS Ian - do you get wrinkles (dermic echoes) if you stay in a gong-bath too long?
